Trial Begins for Assad Regime Representative in Damascus
The first trial against representatives of the former Bashar al-Assad government has commenced in Damascus, Syria. The defendant's unit was responsible for the torture of dissident teenagers in the southern city of Darar in 2011. The 2011 unrest in Darar served as a catalyst for the Syrian uprising. Families of victims attended the court session, where crowds gathered outside in celebration. The next hearing is scheduled for May 10. The proceedings involve several defendants accused of atrocities committed during the civil war that began in 2011. The former leader fled the country in December 2024. Najib, a top security official for the Assad regime, has been accused of crimes against the Syrian nation. The defendant is a former intelligence chief from the Daraa province, accused of responsibility for the violent suppression of anti-government protests in 2011.
