Bavaria Reaches 3 Percent Of Peatland Rewetting Goal
Green Party parliamentary group leader Schulze criticized CSU leader Söder regarding climate goal timelines. Schulze demanded that rewetting efforts begin on all state-owned peatlands within the next five years. The proposal requires significantly more funding and personnel to implement. The Greens had inquired with the Ministry of the Environment regarding the current status of peatland protection. The Bavarian state government has rewet 1,700 hectares of existing peatlands since 2019. This figure represents only 3 percent of the target set by the CSU and Free Voters. The government's goal is to rewet 55,000 hectares by 2040. The initiative was originally announced five years ago to restore natural ecosystems.
