Tokyo Trial's Legacy on International Law Examined
A Singaporean scholar, Lin Xiaoping, stated that the Tokyo Trial was a judgment for prosecuting crimes against peace, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. It questioned how people today should defend the bottom line of just verdicts against renewed distortion of history by Japanese right-wing elements. The trial established new charges and put international law principles into judicial practice, with aggression crimes now formally written into the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. The Paris Convention of 1928, signed by the vast majority of countries, made aggressive war illegal and a consensus of the international community. The trial resulted in 16 death sentences, 16 life sentences, and 2 fixed-term sentences, ultimately delivering justice.
