Prime Minister Opposes New Inquiry Into Territory Conditions
The Prime Minister is resisting calls for an inquiry into the living conditions of Aboriginal town camps. The request follows the murder of a five-year-old girl, Kumunjay Little Baby, near Alice Springs. Shadow Minister Jacinta Numpajimpa Price is pushing for the inquiry to examine town camp management and the effectiveness of government funding. The Prime Minister stated he does not support another inquiry into conditions in the Northern Territory. Indigenous communities and the peak body for Aboriginal children strongly oppose current conditions. Robin Chebanunga Cranich noted that governments of all persuasions must improve standards. The community is currently in a period of mourning. Alice Springs is scheduled to hold an annual parade later today, according to Mayor Astor Hill.
