Freiburg Voters Reject 400 Million Franc Savings Plan
Voters in the Swiss canton of Freiburg have rejected the government's proposed austerity program. A portion of these savings was intended to be sourced from cantonal administration personnel. Correspondent Oliver Kemper reported the decisive rejection of the budget measures. The proposal was defeated with nearly 70 percent of the electorate voting against it. Voters in the Canton of Freiburg rejected a state finance restructuring program with a 69 percent negative vote. The plan, supported by the center-right majority in the cantonal parliament, aimed to cut various subsidies. Left-wing parties including the SP and Greens, along with labor unions, initiated the referendum against the measures. Opponents argue the result indicates a need to expand rather than cut public services. The government proposed delaying automatic salary increases to achieve these savings.
