Mifepristone Manufacturer Challenges Fifth Circuit Ruling

developing BBC Radio 4 New Orleans 10d9d Impact 8
A manufacturer of the most widely used abortion pill in the United States has requested the Supreme Court to allow postal deliveries of Mifepristone. This request follows a Friday ruling by judges in New Orleans who temporarily blocked postal delivery of the medication. The block resulted from a lawsuit brought by the state of Louisiana. Danco Laboratories filed an emergency motion on Saturday seeking an immediate stay on a Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling. The ruling by a three-judge panel on Friday halted a federal rule allowing Mifepristone to be prescribed online and delivered by mail. The FDA removed the requirement for in-person dispensing of the drug in 2023. Use of the medication has increased since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. The state has argued that remote access to the medication presents specific concerns.
