Spanish Detained in Algiers for Visa Trafficking

The Audiencia Nacional is investigating a suspected visa trafficking scheme centered at the Spanish Consulate in Algiers. The number two official of the consulate and one other worker were detained last Friday. Both individuals are currently released under precautionary measures. They face charges including criminal organization, facilitating illegal immigration, bribery, and money laundering. Authorities suspect the individuals were charging fees in exchange for visas. Investigators suspect the officials were accepting payments in exchange for visas. This investigation occurs as Spain attempts to improve relations with Malian authorities following the junta's pivot toward Russia and away from Western cooperation. Several Spanish citizens participating in a festival in Bamako have already been repatriated.
