Irish Survey Shows Emigration and Return Trends

RTÉ Radio 1 Dublin 10d10d Impact 7
The third National Diaspora Strategy was launched this week by the government. Research indicates that one third of Irish people living abroad intend to return home. Questions remain about where these returning individuals will live and if the reality of living in Ireland will deter them. A survey indicated that 35% of respondents wanted to return home, and 40% were open to it. One man cited the high cost of diabetes medication in Canada as a reason for his return. Minister of State Mary Butler of Fianna Fáil, David Cullinan of Sinn Féin, and Kieran O'Hearn of Labour were mentioned. The data indicates patterns of Irish citizens leaving the country and returning.

“also, you know, we also want to incentivise maybe families to take... with this survey, 35% said they wanted to come home and 40% said they were open to it. But amazingly, I had a conversation with a man last year who was in Canada, for example, and he told me the main reason he came home because he was diabetic and it was costing him $390 a month just for his Dexacon and he can get it free of charge here at home. Well, look, Minister of State, Mary Butler of Fianna Fáil, thank you very much indeed for joining us. David Cullinan of Sinn Féin and Kieran O'Hearn of Labour. Thank you so much.”
