17-Year-Old Candidate Runs For Vermont Governor
Dean Roy has become the first candidate under the age of 18 to appear on the general election ballot for governor in Vermont. The state currently has no minimum age requirement for holding office. Roy stated a desire to start a movement to increase youth involvement in political office. The candidate criticized lower courts for their involvement in immigration cases. The candidate has collected 500 signatures from registered voters in the state. He stated that while he is not likely to win, he hopes to provide an alternative to a political system perceived as corrupted or non-functional. Supporters reportedly expressed surprise and support for the teenager's attempt to seek office. The candidate is 14 years old and currently serves as the president of his ninth-grade class.
