German Tax Estimate Predicts Billions In Revenue Shortfall
Chancellor Merz and CSU leader Söder have recently expressed openness to a higher wealth tax. Disagreements exist regarding its implementation and scope. The Bavarian People's Party has again raised the possibility of a referendum on Bavarian independence. This is the second national election held since Chancellor Stamo took office. German tax estimators indicated yesterday that municipal trade tax would be affected, leading to renewed calls for a wealth tax or higher inheritance tax. Friedrich Merz, leader of the CDU, stated yesterday in Berlin that entrepreneurs should not have to pay more income tax, promising his party would not implement such a measure. The CDU/CSU and the remaining coalition parties, the Greens and SPD, could not agree on the issue.
