Austria Enhances Kindergarten Support

Ö1 Vienna 10d10d Impact 5

Since 16 years ago, Austria has had a mandatory final kindergarten year. Austria is mandating a second year of kindergarten for all four-year-olds, which will be free of charge. Additional kindergarten places must be created for 5% of four-year-olds, offering 20 hours per week. Parents will have their contributions covered where they are still collected, which currently applies to half-day attendance only in Styria and Vorarlberg. This initiative aims to assist children who are socially disadvantaged or come from non-German speaking households. Austria is considering a second mandatory kindergarten year, but concerns exist regarding the necessary framework conditions. These include the need for well-trained staff, adequate space for children, and an appropriate staff-to-child ratio. The Ministry of Education is expected to address group sizes and staffing levels.

These include the need for well-trained staff, adequate space for children, and an appropriate staff-to-child ratio. The Ministry of Education is expected to address group sizes and staffing levels. The initiative is a priority for Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler. This initiative is intended to promote equal opportunities in early childhood education. Parents who currently pay for kindergarten will also see financial relief. Austria's kindergarten funding system would also provide relief if kindergarten fees were previously paid.
