Karakalpakstan Region Known for Dissidence
The Karakalpakstan autonomous region of Uzbekistan is characterized by opposition to the centralizing Uzbek government. The region has a history of diverse populations including Uzbek, Kazakh, and ethnic Koreans due to forced displacements during the Stalin era. Violent suppression of protests occurred in the region in 2022.
