Poland Bans Mercosur Products With Prohibited Pesticides

Agriculture Minister Stefan Krajewski announced a new regulation banning the import of products into Poland from Mercosur countries that contain traces of pesticides prohibited in the European Union. The measure aims to protect both Polish farmers and consumers. This decision follows the implementation of the trade agreement between the EU and Mercosur nations. The regulation specifically targets products that may contain residues of substances banned within the EU. The measure follows efforts by the Polish government and MEPs to prevent an influx of cheap food into the country. Polish beef producers have expressed concerns regarding the impact of South American trade agreements on domestic markets. MEP Krzysztof Hetman stated that the European Parliament filed a complaint to address the issue. Polish officials, including the Minister and Prime Minister Władysław Kośniak, worked to convince partners to support this action. The government may also request a suspension of the agreement's application. A decision from an independent tribunal of justice is required before further steps can be taken. A farmer from the Podkarpacie region warned that local producers cannot compete with South American goods due to differing standards regarding GMOs and pesticides. The ban specifically targets products that do not meet EU safety and environmental standards.
