French Officials Support Businesses Opening On May Day
In Paris, several businesses remained open on May 1st despite government uncertainty regarding commercial opening authorizations. In the 16th arrondissement, specifically on Rue de l'Annonciation, shops such as butcheries were operating normally. The government is maintaining a lack of clarity on these regulations pending a new law next year. Prime Minister Sébastien Le Corre Guilbaud and former Prime Minister Gabriel Attal visited bakeries in Paris to support merchants who chose to remain open on May 1. The visit occurred during May Day demonstrations where the CGT union called for wage increases and fuel price freezes. Noémie Belin reported from the Paris parade. The day is traditionally a public holiday in France.
