Taiwan President Addresses Potato Import Concerns
Members of the Kuomintang party in Taiwan's legislature questioned government officials regarding the import of sprouted or rotten potatoes. Experts advise consumers to choose potatoes that are uniformly golden-yellow and to select trusted vendors. Storing potatoes properly, such as by steaming and freezing, is also recommended. During a legislative session in Taiwan, Premier Cho Jung-tai led a cabinet meeting to face questioning from lawmakers. Chen Ming-hua stated that the signing of a US-Taiwan reciprocal trade agreement has led to lowered inspection standards for imported US potatoes. A spokesperson for China, Chen Minghua, criticized the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regarding Taiwan's reduced inspection standards for US potato imports. Chen Minghua alleged that the DPP is sacrificing food safety to please the United States.
