Poland Explores Nuclear Power Future
Poland is pursuing nuclear power development to increase energy independence from imports within Europe. Public support for nuclear energy in Poland currently exceeds 90 percent. The country has reduced its reliance on coal from 90% to 60% over the last decade. The initial phase of the project includes a reactor with a capacity of 117 MW. Poland is considering nuclear energy to meet gigawatt-scale capacity requirements and achieve EU climate neutrality by 2050. The nuclear plant operator promises new jobs, infrastructure, and the reopening of a decommissioned railway line. Local residents in Pomerania express support for the project despite environmental concerns. The first reactor block is expected to connect to the grid in at least ten years. Currently, Poland relies on coal, and its major cities face some of the worst air quality in the European Union.
