Egypt Includes Digital Platform Workers In New Labor Law

Egypt is considering a new civil personal status law that would equalize the rights of men and women in marriage and divorce. This legal matter has remained a sensitive topic since the 1938 laws. The legislation includes four to five new articles regarding divorce procedures. Proponents claim the law could resolve approximately 100,000 pending legal cases for the Christian community. Currently, an estimated 270,000 cases involving Christian family matters are pending in the judicial system. Egypt has introduced a new bill designed to respect the privacy of religious sects through specific legal provisions. Legal expert Mokhtar Ghobashi, Secretary-General of the Al-Farabi Center for Political Studies, noted the initiative seeks to end years of legal divergence among sects. Officials are evaluating how the law will impact social stability and religious integration. The proposal is currently under review by relevant authorities in Cairo. The legislation is designed to resolve long-standing issues within the framework of the Egyptian Constitution. The law classifies these workers as independent contractors rather than employees under the existing Egyptian Labor Law. This distinction means they will not be covered by the standard protections of the current labor code.
