Mass Protests Erupt Across Spain Against Middle East Strikes

Demonstrators argued that diplomatic channels should be used to resolve the current situation. Protesters have issued messages to leaders of the Islamic Republic to cease operations if they cannot govern effectively. The demonstrations reflect growing tension regarding European security mechanisms and the influence of US policy in the Middle East. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has previously characterized military intervention as a mistake. Thousands of people protested in Madrid against what they describe as Iran's military actions. The unrest follows a Spanish government decision on February 28 to restrict military aircraft from using its airspace for operations involving Iran. Spain has also refused to authorize the use of two military bases within its territory for US-led military actions related to strikes against Iran.
