Trump Claims Iranian Military Capabilities Severely Weakened
The US is evaluating military options including Marine units conducting rapid landings to counter Iranian capabilities. President Trump can invoke a 30-day extension to wind down operations. Republicans Rand Paul of Kentucky and Susan Collins of Maine voted with Democrats to block the measure. Some Republicans suggested the extension provision could buy time during ceasefire negotiations. Republicans voted against a Democratic proposal intended to force the withdrawal of US forces or reaffirm Congressional constitutional rights regarding the conflict with Iran. Republicans accused Democrats of attempting to bolster Trump's standing. The vote comes amid reports that Americans do not support the war with Iran ahead of renewal elections.
