Lawsuits Filed Over Louisiana Election Suspension

A lawsuit has been filed against Louisiana for suspending active elections, which allegedly nullifies votes to facilitate GOP gerrymandering. A new lawsuit has been filed challenging the state of Louisiana's decision to suspend congressional primaries that are already underway. A lawsuit filed by 5th District candidate Lindsey Garcia challenges Governor Jeff Landry's emergency order to postpone House primary elections. The suit claims the order is an unconstitutional overreach that disenfranchises voters who have already submitted absentee ballots. The plaintiff argues the Supreme Court did not order the state to halt the election. Candidates and voters have filed multiple lawsuits in federal and state courts challenging the decision to cancel elections in Louisiana. Plaintiffs argue the governor lacks the authority to cancel elections and are challenging the move on procedural grounds. The Louisiana Attorney General stated the state had to suspend house races following a Supreme Court ruling that the current electoral map is an unconstitutional gerrymander. Absentee ballots have already been distributed and, in some instances, returned.
