Greek Bar Association Opposes Ombudsman Appointment
The Athens Bar Association passed a resolution demanding the appearance of Supreme Court Prosecutor Konstantinos Tzavelas. The move follows his decision not to withdraw a case involving telephone interceptions from the archives. The resolution has reportedly caused strong reactions from the Union of Greek Lawyers. The Athens Bar Association issued a statement regarding the prosecutor of the Ripagou Kostadinou Javela case. The association is requesting the prosecutor not to remove the case involving recent wiretapping from the archives. The association stated that such actions by institutional justice officials are direct violations of state functions. Constitutional lawyers are raising concerns regarding the independence of judicial power. The Europarliament has released a report on the state of justice in Greece, which included votes from the European People's Party.
