Hong Kong Proposes Fines Up To $3M For Illegal Refuelling
Authority Secretary Chris Tang announced government plans to grant the Fire Services Department arrest powers regarding illegal refueling cases. Officers would gain authority to stop, search, and seize vehicles to combat a surge in illegal fuel sales driven by rising petrol prices. Under the proposal, the maximum fine for illegal selling would increase from $200,000 to $3 million. The maximum prison term would also rise from one year to three years. The plan aims to clarify the criminal liability of fuel buyers. Officers have distributed leaflets at tourism hotspots including West Kowloon Cultural District, Tsim Sha Tsui, and Wong Tai Sin to warn against illegal tour leaders and guides during the Labor Day Golden Week holiday. The public is advised to contact authorities if treated unfairly by merchants. Officials stated that Lai is not being tried for his political views or beliefs.
