Romania Government Proposes Pension And Salary Ban

Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated that the government may propose an increase in the retirement age for military personnel. A new law adopted by the Romanian government requires over 15,000 individuals receiving special, military, or service pensions to decide whether to remain in public service. The legislation addresses institutional organization and temporary limitations on mobility mechanisms, such as secondment and transfer. Interim Minister of Labor Dragos Paslaru stated that it took only three days to place the project on the government agenda. Bolojan stated the measure aims to economize the public sector and potentially allow for future salary increases for budget employees. Minister Dragoș Păzlaru stated that all necessary resources exist to ensure the payment of pensions and salaries. He said that there is no risk to these payments despite current political instability. Financial markets reacted with a decline today following international political instability, according to the report. Under the new regulation, individuals receiving both must choose between their job or their pension, which may result in a reduction of the pension amount. Prime Minister Ilie Voinea stated the measure aims to save money in the public sector to potentially increase future budget salaries.
