House Of Lords Peers Depart Benches
Sakeer Stamble will grant life peerages to dozens of hereditary peers as part of a concession to secure House of Lords reform. While 92 hereditary peers lost their right to sit in the Lords this week, 26 will now be made life peers. The move is intended to facilitate broader reform of the chamber. These individuals were part of the 92 peers left over from the 1999 reforms that abolished most hereditary titles. The retention occurs following a week of reforms intended to abolish these positions. The process of removing hereditary peers has been ongoing for approximately 30 years. The peers will no longer participate in the scrutiny of bills or occupy the red leather benches. This transition concludes the long-standing role of hereditary members in the UK parliamentary system. These peers will return to life peer status effective 15 May.
