Romanian Senate To Vote On Pension Law

A proposed legislative project in Romania requires state employees to choose between maintaining their current jobs or retaining a larger portion of their pensions. Employer groups are contesting the project, claiming an excessive 85% reduction and potential discrimination between different categories of pensioners. The measure affects pensions and salaries, though exceptions exist for certain officials and those in military or judicial training. A new Romanian law project aims to regulate pensions for public employees, specifically targeting non-contributory and special pensions. Under the proposal, state employees who continue working will lose approximately 85 percent of their pension. Those wishing to keep their full pension must leave state service. The measure excludes employees in the education and healthcare sectors. Additionally, the plan includes a reduction of 14,000 hospital beds over the next three years. The meeting is expected to take place in Bucharest. The meeting aims to approve a draft law that prohibits the accumulation of a pension with a state salary for pensioners. Prime Minister Iulian Ciolacu stated the measure aims to discourage the accumulation of both income types within the public sector. Labor unions have criticized the executive for introducing a new labor tax alongside these changes.
