Sound Transit Expands Free Carpool Permits
Linwood Light Rail is introducing parking fees for the first time at select locations. The new fees will apply to 25% of parking lots at three specific stations: Northgate, and the North and South Shoreline stations at 185th and 148th. HOV free permits will remain available at several lots during the expansion. Only 25% of garage capacity will be reserved for permit holders, while the remaining spaces will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. The system aims to provide daily commuters with guaranteed parking for a fee, similar to express toll lanes. The change is intended to help commuters avoid racing to the station to secure a spot. Commuters can apply for $60 monthly passes or $6 day passes at Northgate and two Shoreline stations. The agency stated the move responds to robust demand and aims to increase parking availability by creating turnover in the garages.
