Montgomery County Council Passes Unmask ICE Act
The Montgomery County school system released new data regarding chronic absenteeism. Officials noted that while the trend is improving, too many students are still missing class time. The legislation prohibits ICE agents and other law enforcement officers from wearing masks or facial coverings while on duty. The bill was sponsored by at-large Councilmember Will Giorwondo. The new regulation aims to address specific data regarding officer visibility and identification. The measure was approved during a recent council session. Limited exceptions to the ban are permitted. The bill, sponsored by Councilmember Will Joando, also requires officer identification and establishes a complaint process for alleged violations. The measure was amended to align with recently passed state legislation. It is set to sunset once a statewide policy takes effect later this year.
