Blue Star Families Reports Financial Struggles For Sailors
Families in the Norfolk, Virginia area have been waiting six hours for food at a local food pantry. This occurs due to high demand and limited capacity at local food distribution points. The issue affects families of personnel deployed for over 10 months, including those from the USS Gerald R. Ford strike group which departed Norfolk, Virginia, on June 24 last year. The packages can take months to arrive or may be lost, according to the source. Terrin Coyt, whose husband is deployed on the ship, noted the difficulty for young sailors on their first deployments. Sailors have limited port visits to rest in normal beds. The USS Ford is currently in the Red Sea following repairs to damage from a March 12th fire in the laundry room and birthing areas. Sailors lost most personal belongings in the fire. Teran Coyt noted the deployment is especially tough for young sailors on their first trip.
