Small Business Operations Cease
Purdue will cease to exist as of Friday, according to a hearing. President Trump told reporters at the White House he is still considering a government bailout. The company's closure comes one year after the Sackler family reached a $7 billion settlement regarding the company's role in the opioid crisis. A public benefit corporation named Knoa Pharma will replace the company. Knoa Pharma will use the remaining assets to continue producing medication. The shutdown occurs as part of a bankruptcy settlement valued at more than $10 billion. US government officials have blamed the company for fueling the national opioid crisis. The new organization will operate under close government oversight and is barred from lobbying activities. The Sackler family, who have not admitted wrongdoing, are expected to make their first settlement installment payment of $1.5 billion before the end of this year.
