Belgium Tackles Prison Overcrowding With Electronic Bracelets
The Belgian prison service is experiencing a crisis characterized by a succession of resignations and sick leaves in recent months. The government claims that measures have been taken and the situation is now stabilized. UDC deputy Raymond Cloutu, a member of the management sub-committee investigating the service, expressed regret regarding the pressure surrounding the dossier. The reports also highlight a lack of care placements for detainees, which is leading to inhumane conditions. The findings were detailed in the VRT News app. Belgian prisons are experiencing record overcrowding, with many inmates sleeping on mattresses on the floor. To alleviate the situation, the government has decided to expand access to electronic monitoring bracelets. While some inmates view the bracelets as an opportunity for reintegration, the system requires constant surveillance and has associated costs.
