Germany Lowers Health Insurance Savings Target
Authorities in Germany are investigating attempts by the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta mafia to infiltrate the national economy and small businesses. Critics have characterized the financial assumptions in the plan as 'accounting tricks' used to mask health insurance deficits. The reform, considered a major domestic political priority, has undergone late changes to its fiscal targets. The planned savings for the upcoming year have been reduced to 16.3 billion euros from the previously proposed 19.6 billion euros. The measure aims to address the stability of the healthcare system. The German federal government intends to pass a draft law today to stabilize statutory health insurance funds. Federal Health Minister Nina Wagen presented a draft law two weeks ago which has since undergone review by the CDU, CSU, and SPD. The plan includes changes to sick pay provisions.
