Preliminary Report Released On Train Accident Investigation

COPE 15d14d Impact 8

The Railway Accident Investigation Commission concluded that the January 18 accident that killed 46 people was caused by a break in the SCARTA rail. A report obtained by the newspaper L País suggests a rail accident may have been caused by an axle rupture. The incident involved two high-speed trains that collided on January 18. The collision resulted in 46 deaths. New images from the interior of the derailed Iriu convoy have been released. The Iriu convoy collided with an Alvia convoy traveling in the opposite direction. Publicly released interior images from the Irio train show passengers experiencing violent lateral and vertical movements of the carriages. Incandescent debris was observed passing by the carriage windows during the incident. The report follows an exhaustive analysis of recorded images from both crashed trains.
