New Pedestrian Bridge Uses High-Strength Steel

RTHK Radio 1 Cantonese Fanling 14d10d Impact 5

Authorities in Fanling are constructing a dual-use pedestrian and bicycle bridge to connect the Fanling district, industrial zones, and rural areas. The Civil Engineering and Development Department is constructing a pedestrian and cycle track bridge at the Nong Yau Dao junction in Fanling. Engineers designed a new pedestrian bridge in Fanling to be as lightweight as possible to minimize interference with underground infrastructure. The bridge will use a grade of steel that is lighter than standard options and approximately three times stronger. The use of high-strength steel reduced the number of bridge supports needed to avoid underground utilities and shortened foundation installation time. Engineers proposed using lighter materials to decrease the number of required support structures and avoid conflicts with existing public facilities.

The use of high-strength steel reduced the number of bridge supports needed to avoid underground utilities and shortened foundation installation time. Engineers proposed using lighter materials to decrease the number of required support structures and avoid conflicts with existing public facilities. This approach also aims to shorten the installation time for ground equipment. The project follows previous delays in civil engineering works in the area. According to Leong Wai-lok, a senior engineer from the Highways Department, the steel is lighter and approximately three times stronger than standard steel. The project is located near the Sha Tau Kok Road area. A new pedestrian bridge in Fanling will utilize a new technology called 'transverse turning' to integrate the bridge and road.
