EU Passenger Rights Gap Identified For Non-EU Flights
A protection gap exists for passengers flying back from non-EU countries on non-EU airlines. Julia Rehberg from the Hamburg Consumer Center explained that EU flight passenger rights regulations only apply to flights departing from Europe. Consequently, passengers on return flights from third countries via non-EU carriers are not covered by these specific protections. This discrepancy affects travelers using non-EU carriers for international travel. Passengers flying from abroad on non-EU airlines do not have claims for rebooking, hotel accommodation, or meals under European law. Travelers are advised to book with European airlines or choose package tours where tour operators have a duty of assistance. One traveler, Jörg Handrock, was forced to book a one-way flight costing 1,300 euros. The booking party eventually explained the situation after prolonged discussions.
