Hamburg Confirms Construction Sites For U-Bahn Line 5

Hamburg's Hochbahn confirmed that construction for the new U-Bahn Line 5 will not use Alster areas or fell old trees at Moorweide. Instead, the parking lot at the Hamburg Dom will be used as a construction preparation site. The project will utilize up to 14 tunnel boring machines to construct approximately 2.3 kilometers of the 29-kilometer line. The construction aims to cover approximately 2.3 kilometers of the 29-kilometer total length across two phases. The overarching goal is to complete the project by 2040. Construction will involve long-term presence of sites and supply pipes in the city landscape. Construction sites and infrastructure work are expected to remain part of the city landscape for several years. Residents across many parts of the city are expected to experience disruptions during the building process. No specific timeline for the project has been released. The project involves underground tunneling for certain sections while the remaining parts will be built using open construction methods. U5 project head Klaus Oppoff stated that the current concept requires up to 14 tunnel boring machines. These machines, which measure between 60 and 100 meters in length, dig wide tubes and line them with concrete.
