UK Authorities Target Illegal Cake Delivery Platforms
Seven online platforms, including those operated by Alibaba and ByteDance, are being investigated for illegal cake delivery operations. These platforms allegedly host 'ghost shops' that pretend to be physical businesses but act as clearing houses for orders. Orders are passed to unlicensed local bakers, often working from home kitchens without experience. The scale of the scam is estimated at 390 million pounds. Customers have filed complaints regarding the substantive nature of the services provided. Investigators have uncovered 67,000 unlicensed cake shops operating across China. These shops are estimated to have produced more than 3.6 million unlicensed cakes. The scale of the operation is described as immense. Authorities are looking into the scams uncovered during the previous summer.
