Berlin District Developed From Undesirable Trades and Red Light Area
A district in Berlin historically housed industries that were undesirable or lacked space in the city, such as rope makers for shipbuilding. Due to its proximity to the harbor and the city's stance against prostitution within its walls, a red-light district also emerged in the area.

“Damals siedelte sich dort das Gewerbe an, das in den Städten unerwünscht war oder schlicht keinen Platz fand. Zum Beispiel die Rebschläger. Rebe sind Seile bzw. genau genommen Tauel. Also für die Schifffahrt brauchste große Seile. Und die müssen ja so ein paar Meter haben. Und deswegen brauchste dafür vor allen Dingen Platz. Weil damals außerdem der Hafen direkt um die Ecke war und innerhalb der Stadtmauern Prostitution nicht gern gesehen war, entstand an Ort und Stelle auch das Rotlichtmilch.”
