Mongol Tribes Migrated West, Displacing Turkic Peoples
Mongol tribes, specifically Kalmyks and Oirats, retreated westward and occupied much of Kazakhstan during the 17th century. This migration brought them to the borders of the Russian state, initiating interactions with the Russian government and provincial authorities.
