Following the Soviet Union, Russian agriculture experienced a period of growth where some individuals believed that increased application of chemicals was. During the Soviet era, strict norms for herbicide and chemical application were enforced, overseen by trained agronomists. The term 'dacha' reportedly entered the Russian language during the era of Peter I. It is believed that Peter I granted land allotments, referred to as dachas, to nobles as a reward for good service.
