Manhattan Island Purchased For 60 Guilders
On May 6, 1626, Dutchman Peter Minuit purchased Manhattan Island from the Lenape Native American tribe. The transaction cost 60 guilders, equivalent to a handful of jewelry. Minuit was the governor of New Netherland, a Dutch colony.
