Research Tunnel With 200 Sensors Pinpoints Earthquakes

developing Radio Romania Robești 7d2d Impact 5
The first gallery of the Robești tunnel on the Pitești-Sibiu highway was struck today, according to CNAIR Director General Cristian Pistol. Video and images posted online show the moment the final earth debris blocking the 900-meter gallery was cleared. Approximately 113 meters still remain to be excavated in the second gallery, which runs from Sibiu toward Pitești. A new research tunnel, 100.10 meters long, has been dug. Boreholes from this tunnel extend directly into a fault zone. Water pumps and 200 highly sensitive sensors are installed in these boreholes. Mathilde Wimmer from the research team stated that this setup allows for centimeter-accurate earthquake location.
