Police arrested a 33-year-old German man, a resident of the Leipzig region, suspected of driving a white car through the pedestrian zone from Augustusplatz to the central market square. Saxony's Interior Minister Armin Schuster stated that the incident is being treated as an act by a lone attacker. The suspect sped for several hundred meters, hitting numerous people. Eyewitnesses stated the vehicle was traveling at 60 to 70 km/h.
