Former Formula 1 Driver Alex Zanardi Passes Away
Former Formula One driver Alex Zanardi has died at the age of 59. He lost both legs following a 2001 accident in Germany. The FIA described the athlete as one of sport's most admired competitors and a symbol of courage. Zanardi was a highly successful Paralympian, winning four gold and two silver medals in para-cycling at the London and Rio Games. Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Maloney also issued a tribute. Tributes have been issued following the news of his death. The International Paralympic Committee also characterized the competitor as a pioneer and an icon. The broadcaster noted he had a very successful career in F1 prior to his passing. The news was reported following Lando Norris's sprint victory in Miami. Zanardi was born in Poland in 1966 and had a career in Formula 1 during the early 1990s. He drove for teams including Jordan, Minardi, and Lotus.
