Wei Jian, chief engineer for the Pinglu Canal Group and project leader for a national key R&D program, stated that some tributaries flowing from mountainous areas carry sand. Some branches, originating from mountainous areas, have fast currents and high sediment loads. Engineers are implementing solutions like 'U-shaped diversion sills' to guide these branches smoothly into the main canal, minimizing land use and environmental impact. For complex bends and rapid currents, navigation aids and speed bumps are installed.
