Hantavirus Outbreak Fatality Rate Exceeds 40 Percent
Hantavirus, a virus spread by rodents, can cause two main diseases, including Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), which has a high mortality rate. The exact number of cases and fatalities was not specified. Forty-three sources reported on the Hantavirus outbreak. Three passengers from a cruise ship at the center of the outbreak have arrived in Europe for treatment. An Argentine government report suggests a Dutch couple may have contracted the virus at an Argentine garbage dump before boarding. More than 30 percent of patients infected with the hantavirus are dying, according to a WHO expert. Maria Vankerhofen stated at a briefing that there is currently no vaccine for the virus. Seven cases have been registered, consisting of two confirmed infections and five suspected cases. One passenger on a liner with approximately 150 people, mostly Serbian citizens, is currently asymptomatic.
