Black Infant Mortality Rate Three Times Higher Than White Infants
A report from the Commonwealth Fund released today shows racial disparities in healthcare outcomes. While Latino residents in the state have better healthcare access and quality than in any other state, major gaps remain for Black residents. The infant mortality rate for Black babies is three times higher than for white infants. Deaths from preventable and treatable conditions are two times higher for Black infants. Joe Bettencourt noted breast cancer deaths are 1.5 times higher for Black women despite routine mammograms. Bettencourt stated follow-up care is often unaffordable and expects the problem to worsen. The findings suggest healthcare systems are failing African American populations in prevention and screening.
