Spanish Officials Coordinate 23-Nation Cruise Ship Evacuation
WHO Director-General Tedros traveled to Tenerife, Spain, on the 9th to coordinate the transfer of personnel from the Red Cross ship "Auxerre" and related health work. The head of the World Health Organization has arrived on the Spanish island of Tenerife to supervise the arrival of the virus-stricken cruise ship. Three passengers have died after contracting a rare strain of Hunter virus. The WHO is assuring local residents that the risk is low, as passengers will be brought ashore in sealed vehicles and flown straight home. A virus-stricken cruise ship, carrying nearly 150 affected individuals, is due to anchor within hours. Eight people out of more than 140 passengers and crew on the flight have fallen ill.
