Three Passengers Die, Authorities Track Hantavirus Ship Contacts
A new aggressive mutation of Hantavirus has been reported. The Red Star cruise ship, which has Hantavirus cases, is currently undergoing trials in Spain's Canary Islands. Three passengers have died from the virus, and five others disembarked and were evacuated in Cabo Verde. The initial contagion is suspected to have occurred in Argentina, which has registered 1,000 Hantavirus cases this year. A symptomatic patient deteriorated during a flight to Johannesburg on April 25th. The WHO is working with multiple governments and partners on the response, prioritizing care for affected patients, safety and dignity for remaining passengers on the ship, and preventing further virus spread. The ship, identified as the epicenter of the health alert, is en route to the Canary Islands, expected to arrive Sunday without docking.
