Japan Downplays Domestic Impact of Hantavirus Outbreak
The World Health Organization stated that a Hantavirus outbreak linked to a cruise ship is not comparable to the early stages of COVID-19. The cruise ship MB Hondu is traveling to the Spanish island of Tenerife and is expected to arrive this weekend. The vessel will anchor off the coast rather than dock to facilitate passenger evacuation. Three passengers died from the virus, and five others were evacuated in Cabo Verde. The source suggests the initial infection may have occurred in Argentina, which has recorded 1,000 cases this year. The Hang Seng Index futures for May fell 300 points to 26,215, while the Shanghai Composite Index dropped 17 points to 4,162. Ward Camp, head of infectious diseases at Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands, hantavirus generally does not spread between humans, unlike the coronavirus.
