Mental Health Services Lacking Holistic Care
A Royal College of Nursing poll indicates that half of mental health nurses find their workloads unmanageable. The union claims high caseloads frequently lead to patients coming to harm. Dr. Peter Carter, a former RCN chief executive, confirmed the findings. He noted that overstretched staff struggle to track patients who default on appointments, potentially leading to acute illness. This situation risks patient safety and the safety of those around them. Many nurses report that rising caseloads force them to focus on managing risk rather than delivering necessary care. Concerns are mounting about the system's ability to cope with current demands. The RCN's head of nursing practice, Stephen Jones, commented on the findings. This care encompasses understanding individuals through their biological, physical, mental, social, and spiritual selves.
